A biker wearing afunny hat passes by a Charcoal Chicken shop. Two men wearing sunglasses edgearound a man lying on a street corner. A group of Hare Krishnas sing and playinstruments as they dance.
These are three ofmany moments frozen in time by photographer Mary Hutchinson on Cuba St, perhapsWellington's most-wandered street-and certainly its coolest.
Last May, Hutchinsonchose 60 Cuba St photos for her third book of black-and-white photography, CubaPeople, self-published to time with her exhibition at Cuba St's. Thistle Hall.Various passers-by recognized friends in the prints, and told her about thepeople pictured. Some told those friends to stop by. “Three women from the HareKrishna photo came in, all excited,” she says. “They filmed me beside thephoto, and I photographed them beside it. That was so much fun.”
Hutchinsonphotographs in black and white like the pioneers of street photography.Legally, you can photograph anyone in public, but often she asks permissionfirst or-when the moment's about to be gone-afterwards. The vast majority saysyes, and she offers to email them copies. “Sometimes, people are unawarethey've been photographed, but I make a judgment about whether they'll mind ornot.”
Hutchinson says shewants to be “a voice for the unfamous people”. Consequently, homeless people, beggars and addicts populate the pages of Cuba People and her book NewtownForever, which accompanied her exhibition at the Newtown Festival. “That'spartly because I see those people around, and partly because they often getblanked by people like me. I want to balance that out a bit.”
“I want to show ourshared human nature and the contrasting lifestyles in our urban communities,”she says. “I once photographed an old man with amazing eyes. I didn't know himbut a friend did, and she gave his family a copy after he died. That's whatmoves me: the times in life when something unexpectedly joins up.”
